About the Nura Gili Indigenous Courses and Programs

Nura Gili Academic Team

Nura Gili runs an Aboriginal Studies Minor and three Postgraduate programs- the Master of Indigenous Studies, Graduate Diploma in Indigenous Studies and Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Studies.

The diversity and number of courses has steadily increased and the Nura Gili staff now convene numerous courses offered through the UNSW Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This provides an integrated, progressive exploration of Indigenous cultures, society and epistemologies and Australian race relations historically and in contemporary Australian Society. Aboriginal Studies places Indigenous experience and Indigenous conceptual frameworks at the centre of the program.

Nura Gili staff also supervise Postgraduate students from a range of disciplines and frequently provide advice on Indigenous matters and present guest lectures both at UNSW and to external institutions and organisations. Nura Gili strives to improve courses through student feedback. Information on how courses have been revised and improved will be available shortly.

Nura Gili's Teaching and Learning Philosophy

Decolonisation is central to Nura Gili’s teaching philosophy that is underpinned by Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing. Decolonisation requires a respectful awareness of multiple ways of knowing and different systems of truths. Part of this process is acknowledging that colonisation continues to impact on our identities and world views. It requires a balance of many different stories and ideas to contextualise the present through the past.

Decolonisation is an ongoing process that requires critical reflective practice examining the way we perceive the world. Critical reflective thinking is a valuable skill that can be used across multiple disciplines. It starts with the self, supporting notions of self awareness. Being self aware is when we can recognise that we all hold biases, prejudices and assumptions that inform our points of view or world view. Learning to think critically will assist students to engage with the ideas presented, to explore many perspectives and to have control over the ways in which they take on board new information.

Our aim is to provide a supportive learning environment where students can build their capacity to act in a culturally safe and secure way. As part of the Nura Gili community, students play an important role in developing the intellectual and cultural foundations for decolonisation. - Nura Gili Academic Team 2008.
